Suzanne Lafont | Children Power 2

7 March - 18 July 2021 | FRAC Ile-de-France, Le Château

"The image will contain one subject only. This subject will be human. Human, it will be feminine. Feminine, her appearance can vary. Indifferently, she can have long or short hair. Long, her hair can be up or down in various hairdos. In either case, the face will be visible. The model will wear neither beanie, nor cap, nor scarf, nor hat. The clothes will be dark in order for no pattern nor color to compete with the skin’s complexion in the exposed parts of the body (face, neck, hand). However, one discreet motif, such as a lining, can emphasize the clothing. [...]" Suzanne Lafont, 1999/2019

Suzanne Lafont will participate in a group show entitled Children Power 2 at Le Chateau, FRAC Ile-de-France, opening on 7 March 2021. Curated by Xavier Franceschi, the exhibition focuses on childhood as a subject, assembling photographic and video works from public collections (FRAC, CNAP, etc.) to show the wide range of ways in which artists have portrayed childhood since the last century.

With a strong focus on big names in the history of photography, including August Sander, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helen Levitt, William Klein and Robert Doisneau, who testify to their era and the position of children in society, the proposed itinerary shows us how photographers continue, to this day, to examine this ‘age when anything is possible’, reflecting the philosopher and art historian Walter Benjamin's questioning of the power of images in Childhood (1934).
