B. 1961 in Lüchow, Germany, lives and works in Lörrach, Besançon and Paris.
Rainer Oldendorf works in a number of media, including film, slideshow, photography, and sculpture. After having studied with Franz Erhardt Walther at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Oldendorf has is working on a longterm project, the film Marco since 1995. Made up of fourteen episodes at that moment in time - filmed and projected progressively in different countries following a principle of continuity/discontinuity, the film takes into account the specificities and constraints of each invitation. The guiding thread throughout the film is the main character, Paul, who appears in each episode; the narrative framework follows a storyline and, at the same time, embraces the fragmentary nature of its production. Conceived as an open, fragmentary, and sitespecific work, the film has been shot in Düsseldorf, Lyon, Tel Aviv, New York, Paris, Bilbao, Kyoto, Lörrach, and Rio de Janeiro, Southern Alps, Athens, Kassel … in the language of each city. The latest episode, Marco 14 is a remake of the architecture congress CIAM, held in 1933 on a cruise ship traveling from Athens to Marseille. At the time, the congress was a think tank for renown artists, architects, and designers on the topics of urbanism and architecture. At the time the congress was documented on film by László Moholy-Nagy. In the contest of documenta 14, Oldendorf worked together with students from the Kunstakademie Kassel resulting in an exhibition in Athens and Kassel. Working together with communities such as students is Oldendorf’s principle line of production.
